On 15–16 September 2026, the ELOXYCHEM consortium gathered in Florence, Italy, for its latest project meeting, hosted by project partner ETA – Florence Renewable Energies. The two-day meeting brought together partners from across the consortium to review the latest scientific and technical progress and coordinate the next steps towards the pilot-scale demonstration of ELOXYCHEM’s electrochemical production routes.
A key focus of the meeting was the development of a more flexible and robust electrochemical process, building on the project’s transition towards a nickel-based route. This approach is supporting the integration of two complementary process lines into a single flexible pilot facility, an important step towards demonstrating the potential of ELOXYCHEM technologies under conditions relevant to industrial operation.
Partners exchanged updates on process optimisation, scale-up, digital modelling and pilot integration, discussing the technical requirements and actions needed to move the project closer to pilot-scale demonstration. Particular attention was also given to the valorisation of Tall Oil Fatty Acids (TOFA), a biogenic feedstock originating from the pulp and paper industry. Its complex composition presents specific challenges for processing, making its successful integration an important aspect of the project’s work on the use of renewable and industrially relevant feedstocks.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the integration of digital technologies and modelling tools into the ELOXYCHEM process. These technologies will support process monitoring, optimisation and control, contributing to the development of flexible electrochemical production systems capable of responding to changing operating conditions.
Through the technical discussions, partners defined a series of concrete follow-up actions for the coming months, with activities now focusing increasingly on process scale-up, pilot integration and the preparation of the demonstration phase.
The discussions in Florence marked another important step towards demonstrating sustainable electrochemical routes for the production of organic chemicals and supporting the transition towards a more flexible and resource-efficient European chemical industry.
Stay tuned for further updates as ELOXYCHEM continues its journey towards pilot-scale demonstration and the development of innovative electrochemical production pathways.
